The State Tretyakov Gallery  is an art gallery in Moscow, Russia, the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world.

The gallery’s history starts in 1856 when the Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov acquired works by Russian artists of his day with the aim of creating a collection, which might later grow into a museum of national art. In 1892, Tretyakov presented his already famous collection of approximately 2,000 works (1,362 paintings, 526 drawings, and 9 sculptures) to the Russian nation.

Central House of Artists

The Central House of Artists is one of the most popular contemporary art exhibition associations in Moscow, and indeed in all of Russia. It comprises the exhibition centre proper and the Gallery of 20th Century ArtRussian: Iskusstvo XX veka or Искусство ХХ века, which is part of the famous Tretyakov GalleryRussian: Tretyakovskaya galereya . The CHA exhibition facilities, some of which belong to private galleries today, offer temporary exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, design, photography, etc. Works created by artists from Russia and the former Soviet republics are amongst the most popular exhibits. The New Tretyakov Gallery presents the most completed in Russia permanent exhibition of the art of the 20th century in all its diversity – avant – garde, socialistic realism and art of the “austere style” and “underground” and some new art trends. Here are held not only large-scale retrospectives of great Russian artists, but also showed experimental exhibitions of young authors.

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts  is the largest museum of European art in Moscow, located in Volkhonka street, just opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The International musical festival Svyatoslav Richter’s December nights has been held in the Pushkin museum since 1981.

The holdings of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts currently include around 700,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, applied works, photographs, and archaeological and animalistic objects. The Department of Manuscripts houses documents on the Museum’s history; the scientific and epistolary heritage of its founder Ivan Tsvetaev (1847–1913), other museum workers, famous art historians, and artists; and archives from other museums that are also included in the Pushkin Museum holdings. The Museum owns studios for research and restoration works and a Scientific Library.

    The Moscow Museum of Modern Art is a museum of modern and contemporary art located in Moscow, Russia. It was opened to public in December 1999. The project of the Museum was initiated and executed by Zurab Tsereteli, president of the Russian Academy of Arts. In 2018, The Vadim Sidur Museum (ru) merged into the Moscow Museum of Modern Arts.

ST. PETERSBURG

The State Russian Museum , formerly the Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III is the largest depository of Russian fine art in Saint Petersburg. It is also one of the largestmuseums in the country.

The collection shows Russian art beginning in the 12th century up to the socialist realism and in the USSR the inofficial art of the 20th century. In 1995 the Ludwig-Museum was funded, which is a substantial collection of contemporary art. The collection holds important masterpieces since 1945, amongst others Jasper Johns, Pablo Picasso, Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Ilja Kabakow, Jörg Immendorff, Werner Branz and Gottfried Helnwein.

The State Hermitage Museum

The State Hermitage Museum  is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The second-largest art museum in the world,[it was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. The museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding each year on 7 December, Saint Catherine’s Day.[4] It has been open to the public since 1852.

Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items (the numismatic collection accounts for about one-third of them),[5] including the largest collection of paintings in the world.[citation needed] The collections occupy a large complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russian emperors. Apart from them, the Menshikov Palace, Museum of Porcelain, Storage Facility at Staraya Derevnya, and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building are also part of the museum. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad. The Hermitage is a federal state property. Since July 1992, the director of the museum has been Mikhail Piotrovsky.[6]

The wooden house belonging to this pioneer of realist painting in Pushkin is a traditional house museum, with several of the artist’s minor works and personal effects.
